A cache with some New Zealand History. And some great views.
I was a bit confused with the sign here as it says Battery Observation III but according to the records this is actually Battery Observation II. Maybe a DOC sign error. Anyway this Observation post was used as a short-range and night observation post, as well as for directing the search lights. In good conditions this post had a visual range of about 30km and provided backup for the radar. the building had thick concrete walls and steel shutters for protection. The grass grown on the roof was for camouflage and is still there today. The womens Auxillary Army Corps (WAAC) operated this post. Groups of eight women , with a male artillery officer manned the observation post during the night, and in the daytime when poor visibility blotted out the views from the upper observation posts. You are looking for a 200ml systema container. You do not need to climb over any fences or go into any restricted areas to get this cache. Please take care if you have geokiddies with you as there are cliffs edges all around an unstable ground.
