Geocache Description:

Hoping to promote  Spring Valley tourism and the geocaching fun!

A historical marker to John Mitchell.  Born in Birdwood IL on 2/4/1870.  He was orphaned at age 6 and brought up by a strict Pennsylvania stepmother.  The family was poor and at the age of 15 Mitchell was working as a coal miner in Colorado.  He became the president of United Mine Workers and is credited with improving wages and working conditions in the mines.  He was author of 2 books; died on 9/9/1919.
