Ohhh a new puzzle's out, hooray!
Addicts forget the TV, family, or whatever, as the puzzle-solving bug kicks in and the puzzle has all of our undivided attention. Our long-suffering partners, families, and friends recognise the signs – the gleam in the eye as the cogs whirr, the unresponsiveness to any questions unrelated to the puzzle at hand… food, intelligent conversation, refreshment.. all are forgotten in the rush to be the first to solve (and find) the new prize! With re-emergence from puzzle fugue unlikely for some time, they leave us to it, and find other things to go on with as we let our eyes and minds explore the intricacies of the problem presented to us.
Firstly we examine the page and ponder those things we find. To test/tease out ideas further we visit Google with numbers, phrases, letters or a mixture of these. What would we do without our search engines? Eagerly our eyes devour the information in each line, hoping for a clue or a glimmer we can take further. Sometimes the sheer amount of information needing to be sifted through would weigh tons if we were looking through books, but the internet lifts that heavy burden off us, as we surf from site to site, checking our ideas. If we look long enough, links eventually will offer up some type of hint, although we may not recognise it as such at the time. We dismiss most of our ideas and go looking elsewhere, usually off on a tangent. Could this be a new code or a cipher written expressly for this puzzle? You'd be astonished at the list of possibilities that flit through our minds as we addicts go in pursuit of the latest puzzle solution.
Investigation, examination, research and if all else falls, shakedown of the CO, are all puzzle-solving strategies that have yielded results for the avid puzzle-solving addict. Hints can sometimes be picked up at geocachers events too, but working the answer out yourself is the most satisfying. Going back to the cache page and looking with re-energised eyes can yield up surprising results, as many logs have attested. Oh the relief I’ve felt when co-ordinates finally leap off the page at me, and you get that awesome feeling of knowing you got it sorted on your own.
Of course you probably have your own way of going about puzzle-solving, but the caching addict knows that sometimes an expansion of our ideas is needed before the light bulb goes on. Puzzles even then can throw sand in our eyes with another unseen twist in the tail just when we think we’ve conquered the task and the co-ordinates should be ours. Upon further hunting and thinking outside the box, we have that eureka moment and finally, FINALLY all of our undivided attention is rewarded, and we achieve that magical prize, the green tick!
Then the fun really begins….
