Bye Bye Sandy: Hello Beach
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache celebrates the reconstruction of an area devastated by Storm Sandy. You will search for a small camouflaged container containing kid friendly small items and a log sheet. A lanyard is tied around the cache container and secured to a rock to protect it from extreme tides. When Sandy roared in, the shoreline was flooded, the seawall destroyed and the local residents stranded behind high water for days. Finally new seawalls, road and beach were engineered.
This traditional geocache focuses on the redesigned rock seawall. Please park in the small public area on the right of Daniel Avenue marked by rows of boulders. Respect the privacy of neighbors and obey the posted ordinances; the public beach area is nestled in between private communities. Please do not wander onto private property. There are no amenities (no bathroom, no lifeguard, no concessions), just a simple beach with access to Long Island Sound. It is best to visit at high tide because during low tide this area is very rocky and unsuitable for wading or swimming. The family friendly cache with a marine attitude is a camouflaged plastic medicine container that blends in with sand and rock; you will need to climb over boulders, as you look high and low, so please wear suitable footwear. Be on the alert for sunbathing, bird watching muggles. Just play on the rocks as you search for interesting sea glass or shells to deflect attention to your geocaching goal! Enjoy the views to LI Sound facing south and Long Cove to the North. Admire the new seawalls, the drainage stream and the enlarged, sandy beach. And observe the undisturbed osprey nest on the only pole left standing after the storm.
