Geocache Description:

To access the cache, drive 8km north of Grande Cache on Hwy. 40 and turn left onto the Beaver Dam Road. Dirt road can be rough.  After driving for 6.8km, you begin to descend. As soon as the road starts down, watch for the signed crossroads. Right leads to Mt. Hamell, left is the Ambler Trail. Park here.

The cache is about 1 km up the trail from the larger trail near the bottom.  While it is not a viewpoint, it is an opportunity to take a break.  There is an open area near the cache located on a game trail.

What is interesting about this stop is the change in vegetation type.  On the westerly slope of the ridge is mostly lodgepole pine.  On the north easterly slope is mostly balsam fir.  The fir is often found in wetter areas where sunshine is not at a premium.  The pines like better drained soils and appreciate the susnshine a little more.  The soils on this ridge are certainly not fertile  - the mosses and lichens are indicators of this.  In northern climes and in higher elevations, one can often find "podzols," soils that are infertile, lack development, and support only cetain types of vegetation.

At the cache, there is no internet access, so if you are using an IPhone, you will need to download the information before you start up the trail.  There is internet access at the parking spot.

Ambler is part of the Passport to the Peaks Program and is a "bronze peak."  The local tourist information centre has more information. BYOP
