The Timucua were a large group of Native Americans that lived throughout North Central Florida from the Atlantic to the Gulf. They were probably in the area when Ponce de Leon landed in 1513. Hernando de Soto led an army of more than 500 men through the western parts of Timucua territory in 1539 on their way west in search of gold. His army stole food, women and forced men and boys to serve as guides and bearers. The Timucua quickly "encouraged" de Soto's men on by beheading fourteen of the invading conquistadors. By the late 1500's their population was greatly diminished because of the introduction of European diseases. When Florida was acquired by the US in 1821 there were less than 5 Timucua's. They soon became extinct as a population.
The many groups of the Timucua people did not share politics or culture; what united them was their shared language. You can find the cache if you are able to share their language as well.
