Middlebury Academy in Wyoming was erected in 1817 for the total cost of $4,000 by Silas Newell. This was the first institution of higher learning beyond grammer school in Western New York. The academy was a private school until 1884. It averaged 150 students per year including 7 that went on to become presidents of US colleges. After 1884, it became one of Middlebury Union Schools unitl 1912. Since 1948, it has been a museum for the Middlebury Historical Society. This is the oldest public building in Wyoming County. My great grandmother graduated for this school in 1912, and became a teacher. Permission granted by Doug Norton of the Middlebury Historical Society to place this cache. Please no night caching. Congrats to bobkatz +wife on FTF.
