The Cache
The cache is a large clip-lock lunch box housed in a camo bag, hidden off the main track.
The Terrain
If attempting the 5/5, hillwalking (perhaps even climbing) experience is required. To go for this cache alone, well, perhaps not so much, but due care is always advised. An OSI Sheet 56 map and good-old fashioned compass, GPSr with mapping and contours are standard kit here. Be careful of bog holes in and around the forest. Also, phone reception is hit and miss; mostly miss, in fact.
Try to pick a nice day... and don’t forget your camera!!!
This cache is close to, but outside, the Glen of Imaal military firing range. Please be clearly aware that anyone attempting this cache does so entirely at their own risk and that the cache owner has no liability of any sort and for any reason, accident or mishap. You can contact the military at 045-404653 to avoid firing days.
Parking
There is a good carpark near the Glenmalure Youth Hostel - a waypoint is provided. You can (when railfall permits) cross the ford in your car and park a little further up the trail - but honestly, I wouldn't bother for the sake of a few hundred meters. If the river rises while you're walking, you could be waiting for it to fall again... Also, there is a footbridge 50m upstream, so you don't have to do the brave/stupid/cold thing at the ford.
Please be aware that cars parked in areas close to walking trails are inherently vulnerable and they can be vandalised or stolen. Be sure to leave valuables at home, leave your glove-box open etc.
Please observe the country code to the best of your ability. Local landowners often generously allow access to upland areas across or through parts of their private property in this case, they have indicated that dogs are not welcome in Fraughan Rock Glen. Please be conscious of this. Please do not cause any damage of any sort to fences or barriers along the way.
There is little or no mobile phone coverage in the Fraughan Rock Glen, so please ensure that someone outside knows where you're going and what time you're expected back.
