This cache is located on part of the historic Wildhorse Creek Gold Rush Walla Walla Trail. It is close to a fossil bed containing excellent examples of trilobite fossils found in the Lower Cambrian shale of this area..
The gravel trail to this cache leaves Highway 95/93 at 4.2 km SW from the Fort Steele Bridge over the Kootenay River. This trail is easily driven and is marked as Mission/Ft Steele Rd. It leaves the highway at 49° 35.57 N 115° 41.06 W. Zero your odometer as you leave the highway. At .3 km turn left following the “Silhouette Range” sign arrow. At .8 km turn left again following the Range arrow. Pass the entrance to the Bull River rifle range and park at location 49° 35.47 N 115° 41.87 W which is 1.2 km from the highway.
This parking spot is at the base of the tailings from the fossil digs. Many examples of parts of trilobite fossils can be found quite quickly by just picking over part of these tailings. At the top of the rise you will see the major excavation pit made by professional and amateur fossil hunters.
The cache is hidden in a green-lidded plastic box and contains the following items:
A Compass, A Whistle, a Collectible 1962 English One Shilling, A Kitimat Lapel Pin, An Apple Computer Lapel Pin, A Wooden Teddy Bear Cutout, Pad and Pencils and a Geocoin Travel Bug.
