Geocache Description:

One of a series based on the book Lost in Bremer County by Linda Betsinger McCann.

A beautiful spot in Bremer County!

This area received some notoriety for being the site where the Barber Brothers were captured. The Bremer Co. Sheriff was notified the Barber Brothers were hinding in the Wilson Grove Schoolhouse. Shots were exchanged and the area was guarded. William and Isaac Barber had killed 3 men at Mount Pulaski, Il in September 1882. Many misdeeds were attributed to them as well. Deputy Sherriff Shepard of Fayette County was killed trying to arrest them. On June 6, 1882 they were arrested near Tripoli. They were taken to Bremer County Jail. On June 8 a mob led by brother Marion Shepard, broke them out of jail and hung them at what was then called Murphy’s Grove where the current Terex business is on east side of Waverly.
