Geocache Description:

One of a series of caches near Wiltshire blind houses, and this one is placed with the kind consent of The National Trust at Lacock, to whom, many thanks

Blind houses are miniature lockups employed for the short term detention of miscreants. Although most could barely accommodate one person, often several detainees were locked up, possibly with a guard. There are over a hundred in England and have several names including round house, lockup or clink. They provided a place for the local constable to put drunks, vagrants, brawlers and disreputable women as well as those more serious offenders in transit to the county assizes. Windows are always absent, hence the name, with light and ventilation coming only from tiny grilles. Most were free-standing, constructed of stone with heavy wooden nailed doors. Most Wiltshire blind houses date from the 18th century although there are a couple somewhat older. More information can be found in Mary Delorme's excellent book, Curious Wiltshire.

The blind house at Lacock adjoins the famous Tithe Barn, just across the road from the Red Lion at one end of the high Street. The actual cache container has been stolen on several occasions and has now been re-located to a quieter spot a short walk from the Blind House itself. It is NOT located at the published co-ordinates. To reach the cache do as follows:- Go to the published co-ordinates and stand facing the blind-house outside studded wooden door. Good luck.

Note the number of iron door studs in each of the top two rows, and the number of locks on door.

The final cache co-ordinates are:-

   N 51° 24.AB2  W 2° 07.CD2'

Where A = (No. of studs in the 2nd row) + (No. of locks/2)

            B = No. of studs in the top row / 10

            C = No. of locks

            D = (No. of studs in the top row - 3) - (No. of studs in the 2nd row)
The cache is a magnetic 35mm film container with small log-book and pencil. Please make sure that the container is out of sight when re-hiding.
Good luck.
