Geocache Description:

Joy Baluch AM Bridge

Joy Baluch AM (10 October 1932 – 14 May 2013) served as Mayor of Port Augusta from 1981 to 1993 and from 1995 until her death.

Her term as Mayor of 29 years is believed to be an Australian record.

Joy Baluch was born in Port Augusta to George & Jessie Copley.
She worked as head stenographer for the Mechanical Engineering Branch of Commonwealth Railways between 1949 and 1953, and was owner/proprietor of the Pampas Motel from 1961.
She was elected to Port Augusta City Council in 1970.

Joy became involved in local politics after her son developed severe asthma, which she attributed to the nearby coal burning powers stations.
As a result of this she became a campaigner for improved health services. After becoming Mayor in 1981, she led the successful effort to ban drinking in public places in Port Augusta.  She also came to public notice when she imposed a night-time curfew on the citizens of the town in order to reduce violence.

Right up until her health slowed her down Joy campaigned for solar-thermal technology to replace the dreaded coal-fired power stations in Pt Augusta

The State Government and the City of Port Augusta have agreed to name the bridge that carries National Highway One across the Spencer Gulf, the ‘Joy Baluch Bridge’ in 2012.

Port Augusta City Manager Greg Perkin said it’s a fitting decision. “We believe the bridge should carry the name of a person who has fulfilled a similar role to the bridge; a person who has carried the burden through good and bad times, has joined communities and has championed the building of a better nation and there is clearly only one person who everyone agrees fits this tall order and that is our long serving Mayor Joy Baluch.”

The formal celebrations for the official naming were held on Friday 17 May 2013.
