[ITA] Il cimitero austro-ungarico di Follina è un piccolo ma molto ben curato cimitero dove riposano le salme di 77 uomini che combatterono tra le fila dell'esercito asburgico nel corso della Prima Guerra mondiale.

[ENG] The Austro-Hungarian cemetery of Follina is a small but very well-kept cemetery that hosts the bodies of 77 men who fought in the ranks of the Habsburg army during WWI.


[ITA] In questo camposanto venne creato durante l’occupazione austriaca della Vallata dopo la disfatta di Caporetto (novembre 1917) in appoggio allo Feldspital 1505, ospedale militare austriaco all'epoca collocato nel complesso dell’ex lanificio. In esso ebbero sepoltura oltre ottocento soldati di Austria, Ungheria, Cechia, Germania, Polonia, Slovacchia, Romania, Bosnia Erzegovina, Croazia, Slovenia, Ucraina ed Italia, caduti nelle battaglie del Piave e del Montello del giugno 1918.
Alla conclusione del conflitto mondiale, si procedette alla realizzazione del muro di cinta oggi ancora presente e al mantenimento dell’area, facendovi confluire anche le salme dei militi austro – ungarici esumate dai vicini cimiteri di Combai e Miane.
Con il passare del tempo, gli oneri di gestione del cimitero si fecero sempre più pesanti, fino all'abbandono del sito; tra il 1939 ed il 1970 le spoglie di alcuni caduti furono restituite alle famiglie, altre furono traslate nei sacrari di Quero, Feltre e Rovereto. La bonifica dell'area venne ultimata, anche se a qualcuno in paese rimase il dubbio che in quel luogo fossero sepolti ancora dei corpi.
Soltanto nel 2004, nel corso di lavori di ampliamento del vicino cimitero civile, l’Amministrazione Comunale di Follina fece eseguire al locale Gruppo Alpini alcuni sondaggi esplorativi che portarono alla luce 77 salme e alla raccolta di molti reperti di varia natura tra i quali attrezzi di uso sanitario, croci in ferro battuto e pietra, e un discreto numero di lapidi riportanti nome, data di morte e reggimento dei militi sepolti.
Il muro del cimitero venne restaurato da una squadra di volontari della Croce Nera d'Austria - Commissione per i Cimiteri di Guerra negli anni 2006-2007, e grazie all’intervento di Fondazione Cassamarca, nel 2008 è stato ultimato un monumento sacrario formato da un piazzale circolare con al centro un altare che cela i resti dei 77 soldati, posti tutti insieme in un'unica fossa comune ornata dai frammenti delle lapidi originali. Ai lati del piazzale svettano le bandiere delle nazioni che un tempo fecero parte dell'Impero d'Austria-Ungheria, unite a simbolo di ritrovata fratellanza fra i popoli.
Sconosciuto è il numero di quanti in questo prato hanno ancora mantello e sepolcro.


[ENG] This cemetery was created during the Austrian occupation of the area after the defeat of Caporetto (November 1917), in support to the Feldspital 1505, a military hospital at the time located in the former wool mill of Follina. More than eight hundred soldiers of Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Italy, fallen in the battles of Piave and Montello in June 1918, were buried here.
At the end of the war, the outern wall was created and the maintenance of the area was carried out, taking here also the bodies of other Austro-Hungarian soldiers exhumed from the nearby cemeteries of Combai and Miane. With time, the costs of running the cemetery increased, leading to the abandonment of the site; between 1939 and 1970, the remains of some of the fallen were returned to the families, while others were moved to the military cemeteries of Quero, Feltre and Rovereto. The reclamation of the area was completed, even if someone in town suspected that more bodies were still buried in the place.
Only in 2004, during the works for the extension of the nearby civilian cemetery, the Municipal Administration of Follina performed with the help of the local Alpine Group some exploratory excavations which brought to light 77 bodies and many items including sanitary ware, iron and stone crosses, and a number of tombstones bearing name, date of death and regiment of soldiers buried.
In 2006-2007, the cemetery wall was restored by volunteers from the Black Cross of Austria - War Graves Committee, and in 2008 thanks to the intervention of Cassamarca Foundation, a monument was completed consisting of a circular square with a central shrine hosting the remains of the 77 men, all placed together in one common grave adorned with the fragments of the original inscriptions. Around the square rise the flags of the nations that once were part of the Austria-Hungary Empire, together as a symbol of newly found brotherhood among peoples.
Unknown is the number of people that still lie under this lawn.
