Welcome to the new Hamburg Park. This cache was placed recently because as a resident of Hamburg I felt our new park deserved a cache. Parking is available inside the park, and there may be some tall grass while obtaining the cache. The cache is very easy to get to,but was placed in a spot slightly off from where kids and others would accidently stumble upon. The coordinates are accurate up to 5m. Good Luck!
Welcome to the new Hamburg Park!
This park is fairly new, and I figured after spending a day geocaching I would place one in this park for my birthday, since it is my home town. Beautiful weather or poor weather, the park is almost always empty due to the larger, more well known park only a mile up the road.
Recent logs brought to my attention the issues with the container. It was replaced on 5/29/13 with a larger, more robust and water tight container.
If you are new to the area, let me give you a little information on the areas you are passing and maybe a little information if you decide to explore the surrounding areas further.
Where this park stands was once a large farm house, with barns, and silos. Sadly the family that lived in the house was forced out due to plans to build homes on the property. This place is very nostalgic for me, especially where the cache is placed, because the family that was forced out, was my family when I was only 8. I am glad in the end it became a park, and not more real estate.
From the park you will most likely notice the Wallkill River, one of the few rivers in the world that flows north! It's an excellent fishing area as it is frequently stocked from the bridge right next to the park.
Next you will probably have noticed on your drive/walk in the giant towers. This is 'Plastoid' as it is known by locals. It has a long history of being many things, ranging from a Wheat mill, paper mill, and at the end of it's life a wire factory. The area surrounding the building is heavily trafficed by fishermen and kids in the area, it's one of the few interesting places in the area. Feel free to take a walk and take in the sights. DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT enter the building though. The building was closed after a large fire, and it has been through decades of decay. Entering is not only extremely dangerous, but the current owner and the local police take no chances with people entering the building and they WILL arrest you if they find you entering the premise. Because it is a frequent fishing spot, you will be fine exploring the area as long as you are not entering the building/ vandalizing the property. I have been stopped by cops more times than I can count, on the property, just tell them you are checking the area out, they're usually wandering around because they get calls when kids cause problems. More recently it's been relatively quiet. I strongly urge you go check the area out, following my guidelines of course, and you won't be bothered, and you will find yourself wandering for hours checking out the abandon buildings, waterfalls and so much more.
Finally, I'm sure you will have noticed the Gingerbread Castle. This area is so interesting as it used to be an amusement park, where you would walk around and be read all the classic tales from Jack and Jill to Humpty Dumpty (who is still sitting on his wall). In the past some of you may know it when it was opened as kids, or closer to the eventual closing when it was a seasonal haunted house and maze. In the final years of its ownership, it was put into an ultimatum, it would be put up for auction on Ebay, and if no one bought it there it would be given to the state and they would restore it. No one purchased it off Ebay, and it was in the early stages of planning to be restored before the economy began to take a down turn, and it was fenced off and remains how you see it today. Wheter it will ever be restored is still in limbo. This area unfortuneatly is fenced off, and like Plastoid is awesome to take in the sights, and take pictures. But once again do not attempt to tresspass or enter buildings or you WILL be arrested for trespassing, as this as well is dangerous to explore.
If you want more information about the area, or have more information you may want me to include, please feel free to message me!
