Small bison tube. Should be a quick and easy find as it is only slightly camo'd and in plain sight.
This area was established as the Mortlach Historic Afforestation Project, 1945 - 1971 by the PFRA (Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration) and the Municipality of Wheatlands.
The area was cultivated prior to planting, and the various stock types and species were mechanically planted from 1945 – 1958, developed by the Canadian Forest Service and Saskatchewan Forest Centre.
As we stopped here on our journey, we couldn't help but wonder if anyone is still actively caring for the area. We placed the cache here to bring others to this rare gem where you can see a huge variety of fully mature trees and bushes. It would be a nice area to educate the young on the differences between one evergreen and the next, but many of the signs have fallen into disrepair over the years.
This area has special significance to Mr. GeoWyrm. His dad, the late Douglas Stewart, used to work with the PFRA. I hope you enjoy this beautiful place as much as we did during our stop here. It was especially nice in the autumn when we placed the cache.
