1969: Apollo 11 Launches to the Moon

Many milestones over the history of mankind have been a product of explorers. All had governments, private investors, and their families making major sacrifices for the pursuit of knowledge and expansion (good or bad) of mankind’s place on this world and universe. Among the more notable explorers are Christopher Columbus in the Caribbean and North America, James Cook pursuing the limits in the South Pacific and Australia, Hernan Cortes marching through Baja California and Mexico, Ferdinand Magellan during the challenge of circumnavigating the world, and Lewis and Clark opening up the expansion of our country that nearly doubled its size.

There are thousands of other explorers with many accomplishments leading to the expansion of the human species. On July 16, 1969 the whole world watched as Florida played another critical part in the human thirst for exploration of not just Earth, but now the universe. On that day a Saturn V rocket at Cape Canaveral launched three new explorers, astronauts Neil Armstrong, Ed “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins, along with their ships of discovery, the Command Module “Columbia” and Lunar Module “Eagle”. Their mission: to have two of them walk on the moon on July 22, 1969!

This was just as much a monumental feat as were the missions of those who many years earlier left their homes and safety to step out into the unknown, Columbus, Ponce de Leon, and Cortes. They all had no idea what awaited them on the other side of the horizon, but they went on, and humankind benefited from their discoveries!
