Geocache Description:

Welcome to Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens’ Geocaching Adventure!

The theme on the Estate in 2013 was, “A Passion for the Land”

A nod to the Seiberlings' appreciation of nature as a guiding principle for their enjoyment of life.

Surveying the Land

From 1912 to 1913, Stan Hywet’s landscape designer, Warren Manning, surveyed the land that the Seiberling family had purchased to build their country estate. In 1914, a map was created from this survey that documented 400 acres of the estate. Stone bounds, pins, and pipes marked outer boundaries while “concrete monuments” marked other reference points for landscape design work.

This is a Puzzle Cache that will test your observation skills. Match the physical characteristics of the Two survey markers to find the final cache coordinates & location. The final cache is very near the "Zero Point", the point from which Stan Hywet’s historic survey grid is based.

At the posted coordinates of this cache you'll find the First survey marker. To determine the latitude of the final location, what type of marker did you find?

  • A. Thick metal rod with NW inscribed on it, then final latitude is = N41 07.250
  • B. Flat Stone in the ground with SH inscribed on it, then final latitude is = N41 07.288
  • C. Square concrete post with CL inscribed on it, then final latitude is = N41 06.986

Proceed to Waypoint SM (N 41° 07.205 W 081° 32.994) to determine the Final Longitude. What type of marker did you find here?

  • D. Large boulder with NS inscribed on it, then longitude is = W 081° 33.101
  • E. Simple concrete post then longitude is = W 081° 33.022
  • F. Metal post with brass disc welded to it then longitude is = W 081° 32.969

Based on your two observations, you now have the Final coordinates to the cache location. This geocache is hidden somewhere inside the grounds. Good luck.

You are looking for a regular sized bowl-type container. Inside the container is a logbook for you to sign and a collectible card. Please re-hide the geocache where you found it and conceal it well so that the next finders will have the same fun as you. Thanks!

We are located at 714 North Portage Path, Akron, Ohio 44303. The Main Gate entrance is at the corner of Portage Path and Garman Road. After entering, simply follow the signs to guest parking and to the Carriage House to purchase your admission ticket. Many tour options are available from guided Manor House & Grand Estate tours to Self Guided Grounds tour.

For Geocachers, the best tour is the Self Guided Grounds tour. This will give you access to the grounds to hunt our geocaches at your own pace. With this tour not only do you get the historic gardens and grounds to explore, you also get access to the Gate Lodge and the Corbin Conservatory (greenhouse).

Please check our main website at http://www.stanhywet.org for more detailed information on admissions and visiting.

Please note, some weekends we have special events going on that may interfere with geocaching due to expected large crowds. Please check our event calendar on our main website if that is a concern.

Open April through December, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is one of the most important remaining examples of an American Country Estate built during the Industrial Age at the turn of the twentieth century. Stan Hywet was home to F.A. Seiberling, co-founder of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and his family
