This cache is to commemorate my family's encounter with a family of marmots that raised havoc with our garden last summer.
My mom noticed that many of our garden vegetables were going missing and early one morning she saw a marmot sneaking across the lawn and settling into the vegetable patch. She yelled for my Dad to get rid of him, but she didn't want to kill him. We dragged out the live trap, but peanut butter and other things hadn't worked the year before. My Nana, who is a big time gardener asked my mom, "What do they eat out of the garden?" My mom said, "All of my lettuce." Nana asked what my mom had in the fridge. Mom brought out the Organic Fancy Baby Mesclun Mix! We set the trap with that for bait. Well we must have had a pretty high class type of marmot because we had her trapped in no time flat! However, she was snarling and jumping around in the cage and clawing at the bars. My Dad couldn't even pick up the cage because he was so scared that she would get him. He yelled at my Nana, "You pick it up!" She yelled back, "You pick it up, you're the man!" Dad finally got the hoe, picked the cage up, and tiptoed across the lawn to the car. My Mom was on the porch yelling at Dad to be careful. We got the marmot into the back of the car and Dad, Nana and I jumped in to drive to a relocation spot. As we drove away Mom was yelling from the porch, "Be careful, if she gets out of that cage she'll attack you from behind, just like in a horror movie!!" We drove all the way across the valley and found a likely spot to release her. After getting the cage out of the car, with the aid of the hoe, we opened the cage and she took off like a bullet. She left dust clouds in the still air! When we got back to the house my mom and my sister were all upset because now there were a whole bunch of little marmots running around the yard. It seems we had captured mom and now there were seven babies all looking lost and forlorn in our yard. After all was said and done we made four trips to the release spot and everyone was happy that we had reunited the poor family of marmots, but my Mom was even happier because our garden was safe!
