Geocache Description:

Small cache just off the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway.  Clear plastic bottle hidden among some rocks with room for some very small trades. For safety reasons, please park on the dirt road a little ways away from the intersection. DO NOT PARK ON THE HIGHWAY!

Mrs. rocketsciguy, who grew up in these parts, has always known this bend in Wyoming State Road 150 where it intersects with Uinta County Road 150 as "Schoolhouse Corner." There used to be an old schoolhouse here, on the west side of the road, called the Plainview School that was in use circa 1921-1956. The building burned down in 1989.

A non-profit organization based in Evanston called Timeless Tracks has proposed building a replica of the old school to be used as a visitor center including interpretive kiosks, such as those found a few miles north on Highway 150 at Bear Town and Hilliard near Sulphur Creek Reservoir.

Many thanks to Brimlie Fam for doing some research about this school, and providing a photo. If you have any additional information about the school or you or someone you know attended it, please post it in your log.

In more recent years, this corner has had a notorious reputation for a large number of fatal automobile accidents. As many long-time visitors to the Uintas may remember, this corner used to be very sharp and could be dangerous when going too fast, or at night, or in poor weather. The road was realigned and the intersection with CR-150 redesigned in the early 2000s with a banked, high-speed curve, greatly improving the safety of the road. Despite the improvement, mrs. rocketsciguy, who has witnessed bad accidents here, still gets very tense if I approach this corner at any more than 45 MPH, and especially if there is on-coming traffic also taking the bend.

The improved dirt county road intersecting the highway here is commonly known as Chalk Creek Road (pronounced "chawcrick"). The road travels west then southwest ending in Coalville, Utah, passing very near the southwest corner of the state of Wyoming (inside 3/4 corner of Utah). During the summer months, you might see a Questar truck driving this road, my father-in-law taking the shortcut to or from work.

Congratulations to prmax on FTF!
