LE LAC PAVIN
Situé en Auvergne à 1197 mètres d'altitude, le lac Pavin est un volcan de type Maar.
Pavin Lake is located in Auvergne at the altitude of 3927ft. This lake was formed in the crater of a « Maar » volcano type.
Un maar est un cratère volcanique de type explosif. Par opposition aux volcans effusifs (dont la lave se répand sur la surface du volcan sous forme de coulées), les volcans explosifs émettent la lave dans l'atmosphère.
Contrary to effusive eruption (characterized by the outpouring of lava onto the ground), a maar is an explosive eruption.Such an eruption is driven by gas accumulating under great pressure. Driven by hot rising magma, it interacts with ground water until the pressure increases to the point at which it bursts violently through the over mantle of rock.
Le maar résulte d'une activité phréatomagmatique fortement explosive par rencontre souterraine de l'eau et du magma ascendant.
A maar is due to a phreatomagmatic eruption, which is an explosion caused by groundwater coming into contact with hot lava or magma.
Son cratère circulaire (900 à 1000 mètres de diamètre) est occupé par un lac (750 mètres de diamètre, 93 mètres de profondeur).
Les dépôts éruptifs, épais de 15 mètres au voisinage du cratère, s'étendent sur une aire elliptique de 90 km².

The volcanic deposites, with an thickness of 15 meters near the crater, are present on an elliptic aera of 90 km².
Le lac Pavin est aussi l'un des rares lacs méromictiques du monde car ses eaux de surface ne se mélangent pas à ses eaux profondes. La limite entre ses deux zones se situe à environ -60 mètres.
Pavin lake is one of the few meromitic lakes of the world. Indeed, surface water does not mix with deep water. The boundary is – 200 ft deep.
Le lac Pavin âgé d'environ 7000 ans est le plus jeune volcan de France métropolitaine.
