Geocache Description:

Located just off-trail and close to the parking lot at Perry Lakes Park. Easily accessible, but watch out for ticks and snakes!

This cache is the fifth of six on the Perry County Geocaching Trail, a project created by members of the University Fellows Experience at the University of Alabama's Honors College. Our mission is to highlight the natural and cultural resources of Perry County, an area located in the heart of Alabama's historic Black Belt region, in order to promote tourism and community development.

-----

Perry Lakes Park was founded in 1935 as a project of the Civilian Conservation Corps. It closed to the public in 1974, but reopened in May 2002 as a collaborative effort between city, county, state, and national officials, local environmental leaders, students and professors at Judson College and Marion Military Institute, and other community members.

The Perry Lakes Park pavilion, along with several other structures in the park, was created by Auburn University architecture students as part of the university’s Rural Studio design-build firm. Headquartered in nearby Hale County, the Rural Studio’s mission is to provide hands-on design experience to its students while assisting the underserved counties in Alabama’s Black Belt region. The Rural Studio’s involvement in Perry Lakes Park began with the pavilion, constructed in 2002 by four fifth-year students and rebuilt in 2006 after damage from Hurricane Ivan. Following the pavilion were the restrooms in 2003, the covered bridge in 2004, and the birding tower in 2005.

-----

The cache is small in size and contains a logbook, pen, and some trinkets to swap, as well as information about the site. Good luck!
