Seminole

The term Sim-i-noli was a Creek rendition of the Spanish word Cimarron, which means “wild” or “runaway.” By 1750, the Oconee Creek Indians were established near the present day town of Micanopy and were called by the Creeks, British and Spanish: Seminoli, Seminole, or Cimarrones. (Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park handout 2004)

Early Seminole men in Florida wore breechcloths of palmetto leaves woven together. The women wore skirts of tree moss or palmetto leaves.

In the late 1800s, the Seminole traded alligator and deer hides with the European explorers for sugar, flour, metal pots, and cloth. The Seminole are well known for their colorful clothing made from strips of cloth.

Corn was a staple in their diet, which also included fruit, nuts, fish, turkey, deer, bear, and alligator.

The Seminole lived in “Chickees” – open aired homes with a thatched roof of palms, and a platform on which they slept, safe from alligators and flooding.

The Seminole welcomed the runaway slaves and shared land and common gardens. The ex-slaves helped the Seminoles by interpreting and teaching them new farming methods learned on the plantations.

The Seminole retreated to the swamps of South Florida when the U.S. government tried to force them to live on a reservation in Oklahoma.
