Ais

The Ais (“Eyes”) tribe lived in the area where Cape Canaveral is today, on the East coast of Central Florida.

The Ais depended on fishing and hunting for food, but did not grow crops.

They used dugout canoes when they went fishing and sometimes would lash two canoes together to make a very stable craft which could take them out into the ocean for fishing and trading. (Kevin McCarthy, Native Americans in Florida, 1999.)

The men did not wear much clothing and let their hair grow long and pulled it up into a topknot, and would paint their faces for special ceremonies.

Their homes consisted of large huts made of wood with a thatched roof of palms, wooden benches, and a fire built in the center to repel flying bugs and deter wild animals.

The Ais salvaged clothing, knives, tools, and gold and silver from ships that wrecked on the coast near present day Cape Canaveral.

The Ais did not like the Spanish explorers, and attacked them with arrows and spears. Five years after the Spanish governor, Pedro Menendez de Aviles visited the Ais with gifts, the Spanish and Ais signed a peace treaty.
