Geocache Description:

Western Market is one of the oldest market building surviving in Hong Kong. It was declared a monument in 1990. Initially a very shabby market, the Western Market came into business in 1844. It was leased from the government by the merchants in the Central and Sheung Wan districts.

Originally, Western Market consisted of two separate blocks. The South Block of the Western Market was built in 1858. And later the North Block was built in 1906, when the South Block could not meet with the demand from the increasing population in the district.

In 1981, the South Block of the Western Market was demolished and replaced by the Sheung Wan Municipal Services Building. Therefore the remaining structure here, was the North Block of the original Western market.

The North Block was built in Edwardian style that was popular in England from 1901 to 1918, and highlighted with "bandaged" brickwork on the four corner towers to give a polychromatic effect.

Adopting the concept of adaptive-reuse, the building has been brought back to its useful economic life by accommodating theme restaurant and boutique shops that turns the building and the vicinity into a place for lifestyle shopping and leisure activities.
