Geocache Description:

Carlton Cache #1 - A Night at the Museum

The museum had its earliest beginnings in 1854.  The Melbourne Museum was originally located (along with the State Library and the old state gallery) in the city block between La Trobe, Swanston, Little Lonsdale and Russell Streets.

Constructed in 2001, the recent Melbourne Museum is situated in the Carlton Gardens and was commissioned by the Victorian Government Office of Major Projects on behalf of Museums Victoria.  The museum has seven main galleries, a Children's Gallery and a temporary exhibit gallery on three levels.  It is the largest museum in the Southern Hemisphere.

The post-modernist building was structured with a grid-like order that embraces eccentric metal clad forms, and is arranged in a volumetrically individual layout, referencing Melbourne’s iconic Hoddle Grid.  The museum provides a place for education, history, culture and society to engage with each other in a contemporary setting and is now a prominent part of Melbourne’s soft infrastructure.

Melbourne Museum has been home to some of the world’s most exciting and interesting temporary exhibits including ‘Titanic’ and ‘Tutankhamun’ to name but a few.

Immerge yourself in a world of science, artifacts and treasures of past and present at the iconic Melbourne Museum.

The cache is a small glass jar and contains a small toy dinosaur and a logbook only, BYOP.
