Death Proof – Todsicher (Originaltitel Grindhouse: Death Proof) ist ein Action-Thriller aus dem Jahr 2007 von Regisseur Quentin Tarantino, der als Hommage an das B-Movie- und Exploitationfilm-Genre der 70er Jahre gedacht ist. Der Film ist Teil des Double Features Grindhouse, dessen Gegenstück Robert Rodriguez’ Planet Terror darstellt.
Death Proof is a 2007 American action thriller slasher film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film centers on a psychopathic stunt man who stalks young women before murdering them in staged car accidents using his "death-proof" stunt car. The film pays homage to exploitation, muscle cars, and slasher film genres of the 1970s (especially giallo), and stars Kurt Russell, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito, Jordan Ladd, Rose McGowan, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Tracie Thoms, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Zoë Bell as herself.
Death Proof was released theatrically in the United States as part of a double feature with Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror under the collective title Grindhouse in order to replicate the experience of viewing exploitation film double features in a "grindhouse" theater. The films were released separately outside the United States and on DVD, with Death Proof going on sale in the United States on September 18, 2007. The film was in the main competition for the Palme d'Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
Stuntman Mike fährt mit seinem „todessicher“ ausgestatteten Stunt-Auto in Texas durch die Gegend und tötet mit diesem seine Opfer. Im ersten Teil des Films fährt er dabei einen 1970er Chevrolet Nova und hat in Austin eine Mädchengruppe im Visier, bestehend aus Jungle Julia, Shanna und Arlene (auch Butterfly genannt).
Nach einer Einführung in das Leben der drei Mädchen fahren diese zu einer Mexiko-Bar, geführt von Warren, und warten dort auf ihre Freunde. Die ganze Zeit über werden sie dabei vom am Tresen sitzenden Stuntman Mike beobachtet und belauscht. Zudem lernt Stuntman Mike dabei die ebenfalls am Tresen sitzende Pam kennen. Diese wurde versetzt und fragt nach einer Mitfahrgelegenheit. Stuntman Mike bietet ihr an, sie auf der Heimfahrt mitzunehmen.
Beide Parteien begegnen einander eingehender, als Stuntman Mike ein von Radiomoderatorin Jungle Julia in ihrer Sendung angekündigtes Angebot wahrnimmt: Julia hatte angekündigt, dass der erste Mann, der ihrer Freundin Arlene an diesem Abend ein bestimmtes Zitat aus einem Gedicht aufsagt, von Arlene einen Lapdance fordern kann. Die Frauen behaupten jedoch, dass bereits ein anderer zuvor gekommen sei, und verweigern den Lapdance. Als Mike ankündigt, Arlene in seinem Notizbuch unter der Kategorie „feiges Stück“ einzutragen, willigt diese doch noch ein.
Nach dieser Szene verlässt die betrunkene und bekiffte Frauengesellschaft, nun mit Freundin Lanna Frank am Steuer, die Bar und will weiter zum Ferienhaus von Shannas Vater fahren. Als Pam Stuntman Mikes eigenartigen Wagen skeptisch betrachtet, versichert ihr dieser, der Wagen sei todsicher. Tatsächlich kann Pam nur auf einem Behelfsbeifahrersitz ohne Sicherheitsgurt Platz nehmen, der zudem durch eine Scheibe aus Acrylglas vom Fahrer abgeschirmt ist. So ist sie Stuntman Mikes tödlichen Fahrmanövern hilflos ausgeliefert und fällt diesen schließlich zum Opfer.
Stuntman Mike verfolgt daraufhin die Frauengruppe. Nachdem er deren Auto überholt hat und nicht mehr zu sehen ist, wendet er, schaltet die Lichter seines Wagens aus und fährt ihnen auf der falschen Spur entgegen. Kurz vor dem Zusammenstoß schaltet er die Lichter wieder ein, und sein verstärkter Stunt-Wagen zerfetzt beim Aufprall deren Auto. Alle vier Insassen werden getötet.
Nach dem vermeintlichen Unfall befindet sich Stuntman Mike im Krankenhaus, lediglich mit gebrochenem Nasen- und Schlüsselbein. Der ermittelnde Ranger Earl McGraw unterstellt ihm Vorsatz, jedoch ist ihm bewusst, dass er dies nicht nachweisen kann.
Daraufhin folgt der zweite Teil des Films: 14 Monate später hält sich Mike nunmehr in Lebanon (Tennessee) auf und fährt einen 1969er Dodge Charger. Er trifft die Frauengruppe um Abernathy, Lee, Kim und später auch Zoë. Diese sind im Filmgeschäft tätig, Kim und Zoë sind Stuntfrauen.
Beide Parteien begegnen sich zu Beginn an einer Tankstelle. Später belauscht Stuntman Mike die Gruppe in einem Café und erfährt dabei, dass Zoë in der Stadt einen zum Verkauf stehenden Wagen probefahren möchte. Dabei handelt es sich um einen weißen 1970er Dodge Challenger, genau den Fahrzeugtyp, wie er aus dem Film Fluchtpunkt San Francisco bekannt ist. Die Frauen begeben sich zu Jasper, dem Anbieter des Autos, um ihn zu einer Probefahrt zu überreden. Eigentlich wollten nur die beiden Stuntfrauen allein die Probefahrt machen, doch als Abernathy das mitbekommt, will sie unbedingt mitfahren und verspricht, dass sie den Besitzer dazu überreden könne, dass sie ohne ihn zu dritt mit dem Auto davonfahren könnten. Abernathy schafft es tatsächlich, Jasper dazu zu überreden, wobei sie ihn in dem Glauben lässt, dass Schauspielerin Lee, die für Dreharbeiten in einem Cheerleader-Kostüm steckt, Pornofilme drehen würde. Die Gruppe lässt Lee, die kurz auf einem Stuhl eingenickt ist, Jasper als „Pfand“ zurück. Bei der Probefahrt werden sie von Stuntman Mike gesichtet, während Zoë „Schiffsmast“ spielt, d.?h. sie liegt bei voller Fahrt auf der Motorhaube und hält sich lediglich an zwei an den Türen befestigten Gürteln fest. Stuntman Mike beginnt, die Mädchen mit seinem Auto zu rammen und von der Straße abzudrängen. Als er jedoch aussteigt, um mit hämischem Lachen seinen vermeintlichen Triumph zu feiern, wird er von Kim angeschossen. Mike flüchtet, und die Frauen beschließen, sich zu rächen und die Verfolgung aufzunehmen. Das Blatt hat sich gewendet, und der Jäger ist nun der Gejagte: In einer halsbrecherischen Verfolgungsjagd wird Mike schließlich von den Frauen gestellt. Diese schlagen ihn zunächst mit Fäusten bewusstlos. Nach der Schlussszene und dem Beginn des Abspanns sieht man noch einmal, wie Abernathy den am Boden liegenden Mike schließlich mit einem Tritt ins Gesicht tötet.
Three friends: Arlene (Vanessa Ferlito), Shanna (Jordan Ladd), and radio DJ “Jungle” Julia Lucai (Sydney Tamiia Poitier) -– drive down Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas, on their way to celebrate Jungle Julia's birthday. While bar-crawling, Julia reveals that she made a radio announcement earlier that morning, offering a free lap dance from Arlene in return for addressing her as "Butterfly," buying her a drink, and reciting a segment of the poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” They are unaware they are being stalked by an aging and sadistic Hollywood stunt double, “Stuntman” Mike (Kurt Russell). After trailing them to a bar, Mike follows the instructions from the radio announcement to get the lap-dance. Despite some initial trepidation, due to having seen Mike's car earlier in the day, and asking if he has been following them, Mike puts her at ease (partly by saying she's chicken), impresses her with his smooth talk, and Arlene agrees to the dance.
The three women prepare to depart with their friend Lena, whom they met at the bar. Meanwhile, Pam (Rose McGowan), another intoxicated female bar patron, has been impressed by the teetotaler Mike and accepts a ride home from him, considering him to be a safe ride. Mike takes Pam to his matte black 1971 Chevy Nova SS 396, which is a stunt car rigged with a safety cage inside, confirming that his car is "death proof". As Mike drives Pam off, it becomes clear he is trying to kill her, reminding her that his car is "death proof", but only to the driver. Since the passenger side has no safety restraints at all, he kills her by driving recklessly and then slamming on the brakes, which smashes her skull into the dashboard. Mike speeds off, leaving behind photos he took earlier of the three other women, so as not to get caught with any evidence. He eventually comes on their red 1997 Honda Civic Hatchback on an empty road, and drives at full speed directly into it. The force of the impact kills all four women in the Honda, and also covers up the real reason of Pam's death.
The local hospital finds Mike with only minor injuries (broken collar bone and smashed index finger), and asserts that since Mike was sober while the four women were intoxicated, he cannot be charged. This concerns Texas Ranger Earl McGraw (Michael Parks), who is convinced Mike is guilty but cannot investigate without evidence. Though he chooses not to pursue a long, drawn out investigation, McGraw tells his son (who also happens to be his deputy) that should Stuntman Mike try this again, McGraw will 'make damn sure he don't do it in Texas'.
Fourteen months later, three young women, Abernathy Ross (Rosario Dawson), Kim Mathis (Tracie Thoms), and Lee Montgomery (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), are traveling through Lebanon, Tennessee in their customized yellow 1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1. They stop briefly at a convenience store, where Mike is resting in his new ride, a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T 500, and is intrigued by the women. The women, unaware of Mike, pick up their friend, stuntwoman Zoë Bell (who is playing herself), from the airport. Zoe informs them she wants to test-drive a white 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T, exactly the same type of car from the 1971 film, Vanishing Point, which just happens to be nearby. After they get to the car's location, Abernathy tries to convince the owner, Jasper, to let them "test drive" it alone. He refuses at first, but after Abernathy tells him Lee will stay behind (under the false pretense that they are in town to film a porno, of which Lee is the star), he agrees.
In the process of all this, Zoe reveals to Abernathy and Kim that she has an ulterior motive in taking the car; she wants to play a game called "Ship's Mast", where she rides on the car's hood using only leather belts to hold onto, while Kim drives it at high speeds. Kim is hesitant, but then agrees to do the stunt. As Kim drives, Zoe goes on the top of the car, while Kim accelerates. The trio enjoys the stunt, unaware that Mike is watching them from the hood of his car. While they are driving, Abernathy notices him too late, and he rear-ends them, causing Zoe to drop one of their belts. He continues to ram down the car, intending to kill Zoe. After few collisions, he T-bones them, causing Zoe to drop. He leaves the car, smiling about the events, but Kim shoots him. He escapes. Abernathy and Kim cry over the loss of their friend, but Zoe shows up, not injured at all (she is a professional stuntwoman). They all agree to catch Mike and beat him, and Zoe takes a piece of pipe and rides shotgun, before giving chase.
Meanwhile, Mike has stopped in a small narrow road to treat his wound with a whiskey. He drinks it and pours it on his injured arm, screaming in pain. As he tries to calm himself down and to have a drink, he suddenly notices them in a rear window, but too late, as they collide with him. Zoe gets out and beats him with the pipe before he makes his getaway. Zoe gets in and they give chase against him, crashing with him on the mountain road. Mike tries to overrun them couple of times to escape, even apologizing to them and saying that it is a prank, but the girls don't listen to him. The chase escalates when they end up on a highway, where Mike colides with some traffic cars to slow them down. He eventually manages to push them on a side road, escaping. However, he is unaware that the side road is parallel to the road on which he is driving; they merge back and T-bone him, causing him to spin out, breaking his right arm. They pull him out and give him a severe beating, until Abernathy delivers an axe-kick to his head, smashing his skull, killing him. As the end credits roll, stills and short film clips of China Girls play over the song "Chick Habit" by April March.
