Geocache Description:

One of a series of simple, easy to find, caches at railway stations in and around the Manawatu.

Welcome aboard the Government Railways' service to Wanganui! Last stop Makino, next stop Halcombe.

Another ubiquitous sawmill site, different in that this time the sawmill is still here! Maewa was one of the few small stations that were manned, to provide the tablet control that prevents two trains occupying a single track at the same time. Remote control signals meant that this position was redundant in the late 1950s.

The station itself was pulled out in 1962, and the only things that now remain are the loop siding, still occasionally delivering logs to the sawmill, and the generator shed. There is also an Austin car and steam traction engine museum just a few meters further down the road.
