Geocache Description:

With 3009 m Jebel Shams is the highest mountain of Oman and military area. With a car you can only get up to „The Plateau“ at about 2000 m. These are 2 different points which are often mixed up in travel guides/books! To get to “The Plateau” we recommend a 4WD. Some passages are really steep and rough! The hike begins in Al Khatim. To get from “The Plateau” to the starting point you need a 4WD. After the view point the last 3-4 km are really rough. You can park your car at the end of that track at a small farm building at N 23° 11.627' E 057° 12.089' (further information about the trekking paths in Oman you will find on the official website of omantourism; there is also a pdf with good descriptions). Then follow the trekking path W6 to the abandoned village. The trail is well marked. It leads almost along the rim of the cliffs and offers a fantastic view over the “Great Canyon of Oman” and the Wadi Ghoul, about 1000 m below. You need to be free from giddiness! The whole route to the abandoned village and back is about 4 hours. If possible add some time to enjoy these really great surroundings! You will find the cache on the trail. Have fun. On the way you will find the cache. Have fun.

Viel Spass

Small note on cache maintenance: Camel Master has offered to maintain my caches.
