Geocache Description:

A circular 1.5 mile trail of 6 caches.

I took over the EWOS series as the original COs felt that they would not be able to maintain the caches if/when they would need it. Only #1 is in close vicinity of its original site, and all have had their containers changed - now a mixture of bisons and film-canister sized caches. This open space used to be called 'Fanny on the Hill', sharing its name with the pub at the entrance where the trail starts. Rumour has it that Fanny, the barmaid, stood on the hill and waved a lantern across the valley to inform the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin when the coast was clear from the King's soldiers, so that he could emerge from his hiding place in the nearby Bostall Woods - the pub sign thus depicts a lady with a lamp. Dick Turpin, born in 1706, was sentenced to death on the gallows in 1739 for horse stealing, so ending his infamous career of robbery and murder. 'Fanny on the Hill' has since been renamed to East Wickham Open Spaces and was awarded the 'Green Flag Award' in 2003/4 and incorporates a small section of the Green Chain Link long distance walk that we completed many years ago. The whole area is extremely popular with dog walkers and so please beware of muggles.
