We have lived nearby for nearly 60 years and this is an area we have frequently walked in, and so being as we particularly enjoy geocaches that take us on a walk, our geocaching daughter who now lives in Africa helped us lay a trail of caches to take you on a short circuit that we hope you will enjoy. From the days of our youth, one of us can recall that running alongside what is now the allotments used to be a greyhound track. This open space used to be called 'Fanny on the Hill', sharing its name with the pub at the entrance where the trail starts. Rumour has it that Fanny, the barmaid, stood on the hill and waved a lantern across the valley to inform the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin when the coast was clear from the King's soldiers, so that he could emerge from his hiding place in the nearby Bostall Woods - the pub sign thus depicts a lady with a lamp. Dick Turpin, born in 1706, was sentenced to death on the gallows in 1739 for horse stealing, so ending his infamous career of robbery and murder. At the bottom of the nearby Shooter's Hill is another pub called 'We Anchor in Hope', named after travellers hoping to make it over the hill without being robbed. On the top of Shooter's Hill are ancient horse mounting blocks called Dick Turpin's steps, and in Bostall Woods can be found what is known as Dick Turpin's Cave. 'Fanny on the Hill' has since been renamed to East Wickham Open Spaces and was awarded the 'Green Flag Award' in 2003/4 and incorporates a small section of the Green Chain Link long distance walk that we completed many years ago. The whole area is very popular with dog walkers and so please beware of muggles.
