Geocache Description:

I chose a location at the edge of Slater Park (a lot of caches already within the park) because it's not only a sports park where Tim mentored a lot of kids, but it also offers a great day out for the whole family. It's not tough terrain but it is VERY popular so watch out for muggles.

Since Tim devoted so much of his time to making sure that kids had a chance to experience sports; I've made this a sports trinket cache. If you leave something, please have it relate to a sport. Before or after picking up this cache, stop and look around you. It's a beautiful park and Tim's spirit lives in every one of those adults playing with and teaching those kids. Besides the sports aspect, it's also a historic park. It is located in Pawtucket and is accessible from Armistice Blvd or Newport Ave. Most of the land comprising the park was once the Daggett Farm, and was purchased by the city of Pawtucket in 1894. Historical accounts depicting the land as densely wooded and swampy which makes you wonder why they did it in the first place. In 1907 development of the park began. The low lying swampland was made into ponds. The underbrush was cleared. Oaks and pine saplings were planted elsewhere, and grass seed was spread across the old farm fields. Between 1909 -1917, a couple of buildings were constructed along with a network of winding drives. Since then, a system of walking paths was added along the river bank and ponds. There is even bridge access to an island in the middle of Ten Mile River. Slater Park is the oldest and largest public park in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. It is named after industrialist Samuel Slater who established America's first water-powered mill. The park offers historical buildings, walking paths, picnic sites, and areas for recreational activities, petting zoo, and even a place to grab some food.
