There is no entrance fee but it is remotely possible you might have to prove your identity when arriving at the outer gate, so bring your ID just in case.
There is a science exhibition inside the visitor centre. In the exhibition there is a simulated elevator that takes you to the final repository cave for the used uranium fuel. Enter the elevator and take a note at which depth this elevator stops. This depth is ABC.

The nuclear power plants
Currently there are two places in Finland with nuclear power plants: Olkiluoto at Eurajoki (owned by TVO) and Hästholmen in Loviisa (owned by Fortum).
There are two identical operating nuclear power plants on Olkiluoto island at the moment, OL1 and OL2. They produce around 14 TWh (14 000 000 000 kWh) of electricity yearly, roughly 17% of all Finnish electricity consumption (17.4% in 2011). The construction of these plants started in 1974 and 1975 respectively, and they were ready for commercial operation in 1979 and 1982. They have throughout their existence been improved safety-, reliability- and production-wise.
After a vote in the Parliament in 2002 the operating company, TVO, was granted permission for their third nuclear power plant (5th plant in Finland). The building operations of OL3 commenced in 2005 and the plant was originally scheduled to begin operation in 2009, but numerous problems have delayed the project. Nowadays the best guess is that the plant will be ready for commercial operation in 2018. When OL3 finally starts production, Olkiluoto satisfies roughly 30% of Finnish electricity consumption and produces around 35% of electricity produced in Finland (depending on future electricity demand). Already now, measuring electricity produced, Olkiluoto is the largest energy producing site in Finland.
In 2010 the Parliament voted for a licence for a fourth nuclear power plant in Olkiluoto. The building of this plant was scheduled to begin before 2015, but since OL3 has not been finished, TVO requested more time. Their request was denied, which put the entire OL4 project into jeopardy.
Used fuel and the final repository
In 1983 the Finnish government outlined that all nuclear fuel used in Finland must be finally disposed of in Finland. Before the law was changed in 1994 Fortum - named Imatran Voima back then - shipped the used fuel from Loviisa nuclear power plants back to Soviet Union for reprocessing.
The planning of ways to dispose of this used nuclear fuel was initiated by the two Finnish nuclear power companies in 1980's, and to this end a joint company, Posiva, was founded in 1995 after the new law covering nuclear power and waste came into effect.
In the end it was decided that the used fuel will be deposited in the bedrock below Olkiluoto, over 400 meters below surface. Several methods will be used to ensure the safe containment from living nature for the thousands of years to come. The building of this final disposal repository started in 2005 and has progressed according to plan. The tunnel reached the final deposition depth in 2011, and the disposal is scheduled to begin in 2020.

Ydinvoimalat
Tällä hetkellä Suomessa on ydinvoimaloita kahdella paikkakunnalla: Eurajoen Olkiluodossa (omistaja TVO) ja Loviisan Hästholmenissa (omistaja Fortum).
Olkiluodon saarella on tällä hetkellä toiminnassa kaksi identtistä ydinvoimalaitosta: OL1 ja OL2. Ne tuottavat noin 14 TWh (14 000 000 000 kWh) sähköä vuosittain, suunnilleen 17% Suomen energiankulutuksesta (17,4% vuonna 2011). Näiden laitosten rakentaminen alkoi vuosina 1974 ja 1975, ja ne aloittivat kaupallisen tuotantonsa vuosina 1979 ja 1982. Voimaloita on koko niiden käytössäoloajan paranneltu turvallisuuden, tuotantovarmuuden ja sähkön tuotantotehon suhteen.
Eduskunnan äänestyksessä vuonna 2002 TVO sai luvan kolmannen ydinvoimalan rakentamiselle Olkiluotoon (Suomen viidennelle ydinvoimalalle). OL3:n rakentaminen aloitettiin 2005 ja alunperin voimalan oli tarkoitus aloittaa tuotantonsa 2009, mutta lukuisat ongelmat ovat viivästyttäneet projektia. Tällä hetkellä paras arvaus on, että voimala olisi valmiina kaupalliseen tuotantoon vuonna 2018. Kun OL3 aloittaa tuotantonsa, Olkiluodon voimalat tyydyttävät noin 30% Suomen energiankulutuksesta, ja tuottavat noin 35% Suomessa tuotetusta sähköstä (riippuen toteutuneesta sähkönkulutuksesta). Jo nykyäänkin Olkiluodon ydinvoimala on tuotannolla mitattuna Suomen suurin sähköntuotantopaikka.
Vuonna 2010 eduskunta myönsi luvan Olkiluodon neljännelle ydinreaktorille. Rakentamisen oli tarkoitus alkaa ennen vuotta 2015, mutta koska OL3 oli vielä kesken, TVO pyysi rakentamisen aloittamiseen lisäaikaa. Heidän pyyntönsä evättiin, joten nyt koko OL4-laitoksen rakentaminen on vaakalaudalla.
Käytetty polttoaine ja loppusijoitus
Vuonna 1983 Suomen hallitus esitti, että kaikki Suomessa käytetty ydinpolttoaine pitää loppusijoittaa Suomeen. Ydinjätteiden niin tuonti kuin vientikin kiellettiin vuonna 1994 annetulla lailla. Ennen kuin lakia muutettiin Fortum - tuolloin nimeltään Imatran Voima eli IVO - kuljetti Loviisan reaktoreiden käytetyn polttoaineen Neuvostoliittoon ja sen hajoamisen jälkeen Venäjälle jälleenkäsittelyä varten.
Suomalaiset ydinvoimayhtiöt, TVO ja IVO, aloittivat loppusijoituksen suunnittelun 1980-luvulla, ja tätä tarkoitusta varten perustettiin yhteisyritys Posiva vuonna 1995 ydinenergialain muutoksen jälkeen.
Pitkien tutkimusten jälkeen parhaaksi vaihtoehdoksi nähtiin loppusijoittaa käytetty polttoaine Olkiluodon kallioperään, yli 400 metriä maanpinnan alapuolelle. Ydinjäte eristetään elävästä luonnosta tuhansiksi vuosiksi käyttäen moninkertaisia esteitä. Tämän loppusijoitusluolan rakentaminen alkoi vuonna 2005 ja rakentaminen on edistynyt suunnitelmien mukaan. Loppusijoitussyvyyteen päästiin vuonna 2011 ja loppusijoituksen on suunniteltu alkavan vuonna 2020.
