Jackrabbit Drives

While settlers in the Meridian area waited the arrival of irrigation, many of them were nearly destitute. A major source of income for them came from collecting bounties on jackrabbits. There were so many rabbits that Ada County paid between 1¼ to 5 cents for a pair of ears. Many of the settlers obtained cash by this method, with one settler turning in enough pairs for $340.05 at one time.

Jackrabbits could quickly take over an area, chewing bark from young fruit trees and decimating entire gardens. Jackrabbit drives were a regular event, with hunters coming from Boise to help in the ongoing war between the rabbits and the settlers. These drives were held as late as the mid-1930s.
