With the movie 'Pacific Rim' coming out in 2013, the word 'Kaiju' has hit the mainstream. Kaiju means 'strange beast' or more commonly 'giant monster'. This is a series dedicated to Kaiju - the beginning SWAG are custom made double-sided Kaiju trading cards!
Godzilla - The King of the Monsters! (I had to start off this series with the best, most well-known Kaiju!)
Godzilla was created in 1954 by Toho studies as a metaphor for the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan just over 10 years prior, ending WWII. Unlike later Godzilla films that turned him into a good guy, here he is an unstoppable force of nature created by man due to nuclear testing.
Godzilla has starred in 29 movies as of 2013! (James Bond only has 23...) Dollar-for-dollar, the most succesful Godzilla film was 1962's "King Kong vs. Godzilla" that truly began the 'monster vs. monster' formula.
Godzilla has transcended into American culture and even has a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. His distinctive dorsal fins, unique roar, and atomic breath are trademarks of the Big G.
Most people remember the rubber suits and somewhat cheesy effects of the movies in the 70's, but Japan has put out 12 movies between 1989-2004 with considerably better special effects (but still a guy in a rubber suits! No CGI Godzilla here!)
So revisit your childhood or introduce your kids to the best Kaiju ever - Godzilla!
