Geocache Description:

This is the first in a series of geocaches exploring historic Ligoniel- the last of Belfast's mill villages. This one is situated at the old public library, formerly the local baths.

The historic village of Ligoniel was primarily associated with the bleaching and spinning of flax.
It is thought the bleaching of linen initially began in the village in 1770. Ligoniel is situated on Wolf Hill, which so named it is said because this is where the last wolf in Ireland was killed. At one time there were no less than six mills operating in the Ligoniel area alone so it is no wonder that Belfast became known as Linenopolis.

The old Public Library at Ligoniel Road closed in June 2010, but that didn't stop the continued sighting of the Ghost of an old man standing in a distressed mode at the left hand front door, sightings that seem to originate from a 100 year old legend. The library building had originally been the local public baths, but was closed in 1926 due to financial difficulties. Opposite the library is the picturesque Glenbank park, which was presented for use as a public park circa 1920.

The cache
- the cache is a small magnetic nano containing just a log sheet, so please bring your own pencil. Be careful replacing the cache in the exact location please. There are houses opposite the library, and a bus stop nearby, so be careful for muggles, but it's not too difficult to be inconspicuous.

To complete the full "Ligoniel stroll" series, certain information is required from the location of each cache. If you would like to know what information you will require from this cache site, please scroll down.
