Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to along the old DT&I Right-of Way behind the local Walmart in Napoleon, Ohio. The Walmart Plaza was built on the former site of the old DT&I roundhouse where my grandfather started his career working for the railroad, repairing and maintaining steam locomotives in the 1940's.

This is a 2-stage multi-cache. The first stage is a magnetic keyholder located at the point where the DT&I roundhouse turntable serviced the roundhouse. If the railroad yard still existed you would be standing in the turntable pit. The front and center point of the roundhouse was about 125 feet west of this point (The next lightpole toward the Walmart store) and occupied an arc of about 60°. The depth of the roundhouse from front to back was about 100 feet deep. The size of the roundhouse was large enough for 8 locomotive stalls. Attached to the south side of the roundhouse was the backshop and the machine shop. Inside this keyholder you will find the coordinates of the final location which is a lock & lock container located in was once a 12 track switchyard behind the roundhouse. You can still see the outline of the switchyard by noticing how the tree line opens up from a single track width of 12 feet to a distance of 200 feet of a 12 track switchyard as you look toward the northwest. Do not attempt to retrieve this cache from the highway. Parking coordinates for the final are provided as a waypoint. N41°24.323 W084°08.060. Enjoy the walk back to the cache and imagine what this area was like when it was a railroad repair yard in the 1940's during the era of steam locomotives.

A web page link was added to this cache page to explain the mechanics of how the roundhouse and turntable system works. Take time to look at this page because there are a lot of interesting photographs of the modern roundhouse complex pictured below. This privately owned complex is used to restore large steam locomotives and is located 2 miles south of Sugarcreek, Ohio on the Holmes/Tuscarawas county line road.
