Geocache Description:

The library opened on May 1, 1966 at the Chicago Ridge Village Hall at 10655 Oak Avenue. Since then the library doubled its size in 1983 by building the Anne Pote addition, named after the first library director. In 2000 the library began another expansion project that added 10,000 square feet to the building and moved its front entrance to 10400 S. Oxford Avenue.

Chicago Ridge Public Library circa 1966History of Chicago Ridge Public Library

In 1964, village board president Arthur Cooper, appointed a commission to conduct and operate a library in Chicago Ridge. The first step taken by the commission was the creation of an organization known as “Friends of the Library.” The Friends of the Library conducted fundraising projects until money could be allotted for a library through a tax levy. School District 127 ½ granted the library commission the use of a room in the school building at 104th and Oxford Avenue to house the newly born library. Over the summer of 1965, volunteers catalogued books and built library shelves.

While all this was happening, the village board informed the library commission that the library would be placed in the old Presbyterian Church at 105th and Oxford Avenue. As a result the library was never formally established at the school. Ironically, the old church building was never used by the public due to finding a suspected structural weakness in the steeple. Instead the library opened on May 1, 1966 at Chicago Ridge Village Hall at 10655 Oak Avenue. Volunteers ran the library until December 10, 1966 when a referendum was passed and library trustees were elected.

With the support of village residents and the efforts of trustees, the library moved to 6310 W. Birmingham Avenue in 1979. In the early 1980’s, developer Ken Tucker offered the trustees a license to operate a reading room at the Chicago Ridge Mall for an annual fee of $1. The reading room started receiving visitors in August of 1982 and remained open until the late 1990’s.

The library doubled its size in 1983 by building the Anne Pote addition, named after the first library director. In 2000 the library began another expansion project that added 10,000 square feet to the building and moved its front entrance to 10400 S. Oxford Avenue. Quiet study rooms, a reading room, increased computer workstations, and a young adult area were added.
