Some say that when it comes to religion Cumbrae's history is at least equal to that of Iona. It is thought that no less a saint than Columba visited the island and founded a church here. Before it became established as 'Millport' there was a community here known as 'Kirkton'.

This cache will introduce you to the College and Cathedral of The Isles, the smallest cathedral in Europe. An architectural gem built in local stone with a 123 foot spire, it was designed by the renowned church architect William Butterfield and paid for by the Hon G F Boyle who later became 6th Earl of Glasgow. It was begun in 1849 and opened for worship in 1851. Originally it was intended to serve as a training college for men intending to enter the ministry of the Scottish Episcopal Church but funding ran out in a 19th century bank crash. These days it is run as a retreat house for people wanting some time away from their busy lives and is open to individuals and groups. You don't have to be religious, however, to stay here!

If you choose to climb the steps and take a closer look round the back you may spot a dove carved into the stonework - the symbol of both Columba and of the Holy Spirit (to whom the cathedral is dedicated). However, in sympathy for those who prefer views from afar, enjoy the scent of the wild garlic and gather the information you need just inside the delightful gate. There you'll find an information panel which includes a phone number. Ignore the area code and take note of the six digit number.

To work out the final coordinates take 203 from the first three digits and add 216 to the second three digits: N55 45.XXX (first 3 digits minus 203), W004 55.XXX (second 3 digits plus 216).
