Hawaiian honeycreepers are small, passerine birds endemic to Hawaiʻi.
Hawaiian honeycreepers are a family of birls that live in the forest regions of the Hawaiian Islands. These rare and beautiful birds are found nowhere else in the world ,and most are on the endangered species list.
The Saddle Road on Hawaii Island to many of these remarkable birds. The ohia trees provide the sweet nectar that is their main food staple.
This large cache is a tribute to these birds. It is located pass the 25 mile marker, just before where the divided highway ends. A short walk over the lava rocks and through the ohia trees will take you to the cache. Here you can experience the beautiful songs of the apapane, a beautiful red honeycreeper, as it darts from tree to tree.
I was fortunate enough at the time of cache placement, to have an encounter with some apapane. It was like they were welcoming me to there home in the mountains. I just sat in wonder and joy,as I watched the birds hop from branch to branch. A rare and special treat.
As always malama(TAKE CARE) the 'aina(LAND), and practice CITO as you cache. Please place the cache exactly as you find it, and NO SPOILERS PLEASE!
