Vardar River is the main river flow in Macedonia. It rises in the Shar Mountains and flows northeast past Gostivar and Tetovo (in the Gostivar–Tetovo depression); it then turns sharply to flow southeast past Skopje and Veles into Greece, where it enters the Gulf of Salonika of the Aegean Sea. Of its total length of 420 km, 300 km are in Macedonia. According to some historical sources, until 19th century Vardar River was navigable from the Veles city to the Salonika Gulf. However, due to numerous natural factors and anthropogenic influences (climate conditions, over logging, goat grazing, forest fires etc.) massive processes of soil erosion developed, filling the basin of Vardar with sediment. This caused gradually decrease of the depth of the river and disabled water transportation.
Vamos a la playa in the 50-ies
Vardar splits Skopje on two halves. It has few smaller tributaries, as Treska, Serava, Lepenec etc.
Before the riverbed of Vardar was fully regulated, citizens of Skopje could enjoy swimming, sunbathing and playing on couple beaches. The water was clear, sand and gravel river bed was ideal for summer enjoyment. I believe that Andrews sisters’ song “Rum and Coca Cola” was a hit! (“If you ever go down Trinidad / They make you feel so very glad / Calypso sing and make up rhyme / / Guarantee you one real good fine time. Drinkin' rum and Coca-Cola / Go down Point Koomahnah ………”)
City authorities decided to bring some atmosphere of “these days” to Skopje by establishing City beach (Gradska plazha) between the Vardar and City Park. Here you can make what people usually do on beach: sunbathing, expose you abs (abdominal muscles), watch some others abs, listen music, eat and drink…
Vamos a la playa today
However, swimming in Vardar is forbidden. There is not beach lifeguard and water quality is suspicious! If you still want to try it (but rather don’t!), you might get out of the water looking like a giraffe with strange spots on your skin…
