A cache at Keppel Pier.

For many years most people arriving in Millport came not by car ferry but by steamship. In the 1830s a pier was built to serve larger ships visiting the town and this same pier is still in use today by fine ships like the Waverley. However, the 'Old Pier' as it became known has its limitations. It can be tricky to approach in stormy weather and it is unsuitable for ships which sit deep in the water. For these reasons, and to serve the villas which were expanding the town around the bay, a new pier was built in the late 1880s.

Known as Keppel Pier, the deep water in which it sat allowed much larger vessels to call at Millport easily and enabled passengers to land when bad weather had closed the Old Pier. The Paddle Steamer Waverley calls here in the summer.

When the nearby Marine Station opened in 1896 Keppel Pier was a very convenient place for its visitors (and marine specimens!) to come ashore. Once the car ferry service began in the early 1970s Keppel Pier became redundant and was bought by the Marine Station for its private use.

The pier you see now is a fairly recent rebuild of the original structure and still belongs to the Marine Station. The adjacent pier buildings contain a hyperbaric chamber - a life saver for a diver who has come to the surface too rapidly and is suffering from 'the bends' (bubbles in the blood). It is fascinating to peer through the windows and see the chamber!

Congratulations to FrlKitty for achieving a FTF many kilometres from home!
