Geocache Description:

A rough track was established between Perth and Albany. It had reached Mount Barker by late 1835 and by 1860 the traffic on the track was sufficient for William Cooper to build The Bush Inn to cater for passing trade.

For many years the Bush Inn was the only building in what is now the township of Mt.Barker. By 1869 what had started as a modest three rooms, grew as it became a regular stopping place for mailmen and a watering hole for local settlers and shepherds.

Business was boosted in 1880 when a regular Royal Mail passanger coach service commenced between Albany and Perth, however, the opening of the railway in 1899 relocated the towns activities closer to the railway station. After the Park Hotel (Plantagenet Hotel) was opened in 1914, the Old Bush Inn was delicenced. All that remains of this original settlement is crumbling ruins.
