Geocache Description:

The cache is located in a county park on Lake Michigan (There is a $7 daily parking fee). The easy route is a 1/4 mile hike from the main parking area. The hard route is a longer but scenic climb. The trails will lead you toward the picturesque lake shore.

In the expedition to find The Shores of Michi-gama you will journey towards the great Lake Michigan and the diverse dune ecosystem that makes up its shores. The cache is named after waters it resides by, which were once home to the Native Americans. The name comes from a similar Ojibwa Indian word mishigami, meaning large lake. History of the cache: This cache was placed back in 2001 by our family in one of our favorite county parks. Back when the cache was originally placed, they were allowed to be shallowly buried. Hence, the original description for the cache describes it's resting place at the base of a forked tree. "The cache is located in a county park on Lake Michigan (There is a $4 daily parking fee). The easy route is a 1/4 mile hike from the main parking area. The hard route is a longer but scenic climb. The trails will lead you within 100 feet of the small forked tree it is buried beneath. *** Caution: It has been noted that a poison ivy hazard exists around the cache during spring and summer months. The cache is in an ammo box, buried 2 feet from the base of the forked tree. It is covered by approximately 2 inches of sand. It is located on the side of the tree facing the lake." Original hint: "If you are having difficulty locating the cache, look for a bowl in the dune towards the lake, just off the main trail. Look for a large tree with an oval hole near the bottom portion of the tree. Close to this tree, towards the lake, is a forked tree. Look for the red thumbtack near the base of this tree." Original coordinates: N 42° 56.592' W 86° 13.100' However, to comply with today's cache hiding guidelines, the cache was moved to it's current location near the lake shore. This was done to move the cache closer to the trail to prevent unnecessary dune erosion and to comply with the no burying rule that was introduced after the cache was originally placed. As of 5/2/2020 this cache is the 11th oldest cache in the state of Michigan. And will hopefully be maintained for many years to come.
