Geocache Description:

This cache is close to the historical homestead, now hosting a coffee shop.

Rietvlei Nature Reserve
The Rietvlei Nature Reserve is one of the largest, if not the largest, nature reservation in an urban suburban area in the world.
The Rietvlei Nature Reserve was originally created in order to protect the catchment area or the Rietvlei dam against pollution and unwanted habitation.
An entrance fee of approx. R40 per adult is payable upon entrance to the park.

The Homestead Cache:
The “Historical Homestead” was built by the 3rd owner of the farm Rietvallei (Rietvlei), Stephanus Petrus Erasmus, and his wife Anna Catharina, between 1875 and 1904.  Anna was the daughter of Voortrekker leader Louis Trichardt.  They lived here with their 3 sons.
Stephanus Petrus Erasmus inherited the northern half of the farm Rietvlej when his farther, Daniel “Doornkloof” Erasmus died in April 1875.  Petrus and Anna lived in the “Historical Homestead” until Anna’s death on 30 Oct 1904.  She was buried next to her infant son in 1904.  During his stay in the “Historical Homestead”, from 1875 to 1904, two of Stephanus Petrus’ sons, and his wife died.  Their second son died in 1908 of malaria at age 32.  The 3rd son Carolus Johannes Trichardt Erasmus died in a shooting accident in 1896 at age 19.
The northern half of Rietvlej farm, described as “Extend 1”, changed owners a number of times.  On 2 September 1929 the government bought this half of the farm now named “Rietvallei”, including the “Historical Homestead” from DM Munro.
