Geocache Description:

The Parish Church of the Ascension is one of Chelmsford’s newer church buildings and celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2012.

A new District, known as "The District of the Ascension, Chelmsford" was formed in 1930. At this time there was no permanent Church, so the licensed building of St. Peter's was used for worship.
The Ascension Church was created at a cost of around £22,000 out of the Cathedral parish covering the area served by St Peter’s and All Saint’s Church on the Boarded Barns estate, with the intention of providing a permanent parish church to replace both.

It was on the 29th September 1962 that the new Church of the Ascension was completed and consecrated, and thus became the Parish Church. The Lord Bishop of Chelmsford, John Tiarks officiated at the consecration ceremonies. The architect of the new Church was Lawrence King. Mr. King is well known for his modern Church architecture and his use of gold leaf in decoration. Features such as the eastward facing High Altar and Stations of the Cross depicted around the building, indicate the traditional form of worship observed.



The most visually stunning part of the building is the sanctuary window of abstract glass, designed by John Haywood in 1963.
 


Upon the completion of the Ascension building, St. Peter's was closed and many of its members were transferred to the Ascension.   A note of historical interest is that, when St. Peter's Church was demolished the font was removed to the Chelmsford and Essex Museum.

You are looking for a nano cache so please bring your own pen. The cache is in a very residential area and GZ is overlooked by many properties. There is restricted parking in the streets surrounding the church. Please take great care in retrieving this cache and replace it exactly as found.
