Eventually, though, as so many celebrities come to realize, the spotlight can be an exhausting place to live, so Charles arranged for d’Artagnan to “die” at the Siege of Maastricht in the Franco-Dutch War, on June 26, 1673.
Charles had discovered his immortality very early in his career with the Musketeers. After mere weeks in the Royal Guard, he developed a rather serious infatuation for a beautiful young lady and in his ardent pursuit of her, he neglected to take notice of her very large, very jealous husband. The man was a member of Louis’s Garde du Corps and he challenged Charles to a duel. Unfortunately for Charles, the man’s weapon of choice that day was not the sword, but rather the flintlock and Charles was struck down by a lead ball that passed through his heart. He was quickly carried from the field by his comrades, Porthos and Aramis, but he did not die from his wound. He was, however, cured of his infatuation.
After d'Artagnan‘s “death” in the Netherlands, he lived the next 250 years or so quietly in various towns and villages throughout France. Among his many careers, he spent time as a gentleman farmer in Bergerac, a modestly successful vintner in Bordeaux, a brooding artist in Nantes, and an inspired chef at the famous Pavillon LeDoyen in Paris. Early in the 20th Century he immigrated to America and one afternoon while attending the cinema, he sat rather bemusedly watching Douglas Fairbanks portrayal of himself, d’Artagnan, on the silver screen in The Three Musketeers!
His American lives have included many years as a fencing instructor at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis; he was a tenured history professor at Yale, a reclusive horse whisperer in Wyoming, and as the time for the Gathering approached, he had established quite a local reputation as a baker in Bakersfield, specializing in French pastry. Throughout his many lifetimes, he has kept his sword with him, and he is always most at ease when it is in his hand.
Can you help Charles determine where the Gathering will take place? You need to find all the caches in this series and collect clues from them to locate where these immortals will be doing battle.
Remember, there can be only ONE!
The cache is a small camo-ed container that contains a clue you will need to find the final. You will find the necessary info on a laminated blue card or on the log sheet. If neither is legible please message me for the clue.
