Geocache Description:

This is a new cache..  There was one located here previously but it was archived.  It should be noted that you do not need to climb on or under the locomotive...please respect this piece of history!

ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE NO. 17

1930 - Built by Baldwin Westinghouse for Salt Lake and Utah Railway, a 70 ton locomotive.

1954 - Rebuilt to 80 tons and operated by Grand River Railway of Preston Ontario.

1963-71 - Cornwall Street Railway & Power Company Limited of Cornwall Ontario

1971 - Canadian National Railways, retired from service.

Cornwall's electric railway service began in 1896 with the Cornwall Electric Street Railway Company Limited purchasing two locomotives to handle freight from the Grand Trunk Railway to local industries over their electric street car trackage on Pitt Street and Water Street. In 1948 trolley coaches replaced street cars and freight cars were gradually removed from the city streets.

In 1971 the C.N.R. purchased the freight operation and retired the electric locomotives ending a 75 year era of electric locomotives in Cornwall.

Locomotive 17 was donated by the C.N.R. in 1971 and restored in 1981.

After Locomotive 17 retired, it was located in front of the city's water treatment plant on Second Street West until a few years ago where it was relocated to its present location.

The cache container is a small lock n lock and with a logbook  (practise smart caching-bring your own pen/pencil).  It can hold small trade items.  I like to think it is an interesting hide so please do not post pictures of the location or hints in your log entires...we know what will happen to them!

Enjoy!
