The Church of St. John The Evangelist – Purton, Gloucestershire

For centuries, the inhabitants of Purton had found themselves to be in the ecclesiastical parish of Berkeley and the looked to the Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin (Which stands alongside the castle) for all their spiritual needs.

In the early part of the last century, a large upper room in an out building of The Berkeley Arms public house had been used for services and Sunday school activities. The diocese of Gloucester and Bristol decided that a ‘chapel of ease’ should be built to serve the needs of this remote corner of the Berkeley parish. The church that stands in Purton today was built in 1874 for the sum of £ 722 and was completed within six months.

The foundation stone of the building was laid by Lady Fitzhardinge of Berkeley Castle on Saturday 9th May 1874 and on 5th November that same year, the Lord Bishop Of Gloucester and Bristol officiated at the service of dedication.

On 5th November 1974, the Right Reverend Robert Deakin, Bishop of Tewkesbury, was present to lead a centenary thanksgiving service. For over a hundred years now the people have been served by this church and many have themselves served the church in various capacities over the years.

The building adjoining the church today was built in memory of Phyllis Pateince Collett, who for nearly forty years was ‘caretaker’ here. It was her ambition to provide facilities for people when they were gathered at church. On her death, her husband, Victor asked that instead of flowers, donations in ‘Lieu for a Loo’ should be given. Following much fundraising and through the generosity of Mr Collett and the people from the village and beyond the Phyllis Collett Room was built. It was dedicated to her memory by the Bishop Of Gloucester, the Rt. Rev. John Yates in 1990.

“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list”
