With the movie 'Pacific Rim' coming out in 2013, the word 'Kaiju' has hit the mainstream. Kaiju means 'strange beast' or more commonly 'giant monster'. This is a series dedicated to Kaiju - the beginning SWAG are custom made double-sided Kaiju trading cards!
Godzilla is the King of the Monsters, but Gamera ranks up there as well as one of the best Kaiju ever!
Godzilla was created by Toho Studios, and Daiei Studios wanted to do their own monster. But how to make him different than Godzilla??? Start with the fact that Gamera is a turtle. A turtle with giant 'reverse sabertooth teeth'. Oh and lastly, this turtle can fly! Not just fly, but by shooting his trademark blue flames from each arm and leg hole, Gamera will spin like a top as he flies! Oh, and he can breath fire too. And he has a distintive roar...
Gamera started off as a bad guy (much like Godzilla) in 1965, but soon turned into a good guy, so much so, that Gamera became known as a "friend to all children." Gamera movies tend to be more geared towards a younger audience, which is funny because Gamera is much more of a bleeder than Godzilla! All the time Gamera gets cut or stabbed and blue blood just comes gushing out!?!?
Many of the 7 original movies from 1965 to 1971 have been skewered by the Mystery Science Theater 3000 guys. However, in 1995 a new trilogy began with "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe" and this trilogy is regarded as one of the best set of Kaiju movies ever made!
So if you haven't had a chance to check out the big Terrapin of Terror, give Gamera a try. If a Mount Rushmore of Kaiju were made, this turtle would definately make the cut!
By the way, take a look at the nearby rocks. If those were Gamera's teeth, imagine just how big he is...
