The beautiful little pond in Laleham Village is there thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of a group of volunteers. The Spelthorne Civic Pride volunteers have worked tirelessly for many hundreds of hours, to maintain and create the feature that is currently there.
Records of the village reveal that there had been a pond on this site since 1604. A long term local resident, recalled skating on the pond as a child, and was disappointed to find it was long gone. He approached the Civic pride volunteers, who discovered who the land was owned by, and put in a lot of time and effort to restore the pond and its surrounding.
Now this beautiful and tranquil area is very much part of the village and it is thanks to the persistence and efforts of local people.
Today the pond is a wonderful habitat for rare wild life, and it is often possible to see Kingfishers, Water Voles and even Great Crested Newts. None of this would have been possible without the efforts of the Spelthorne Civic pride volunteers who hold regular working partys to ensure the weeds and brambles are cut back and controlled. If you are interested in joining them, do contact the Laleham Residents Association and we will put you in touch. In the meantime, wander down and visit this beautiful spot and enjoy the tranquillity and peace you will find there.
I would like to tell you when the pond is regularly open to visitors, but can find nothing on line or at the site to tell me this. The gate was locked when I visited on a Thursday evening in May at approx 7.45pm. Therefore this cache is placed just outside the fenced of area that encloses the pond, and is therefore available to find 24/7, but be careful and stealthy as this is close to a busy road.
Happy hunting
